1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR

For many automotive enthusiasts, the rear end design of the 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR is as good as it gets. That’s a perfect booty. However, it’s not just style that makes the ‘68 Shelby Mustang so timeless. This classic American sports car can perform exceptionally for its era, making it even more desirable to collectors.

If you happen to be in the market for a 1968 GT500KR, today is your lucky day. This particular ‘68 Shelby GT500KR is available for sale via auction through Bring a Trailer.

As one of the 1,053 total mid-1968 “King of the Road” fastback models ever produced, this Shelby GT500KR breathes rarefied air. Under the hood is where this Shelby snake slithers and it can get away from you in a hurry. That’s because of the 428 cubic-inch Cobra Jet V8 engine, factory-rated at a modest 335 horsepower.

Of course, this number was a conservative press release rating at the time. Legend has it, the decision to release the conservative 335 hp rating publicly was for insurance purposes. Many collectors, enthusiasts, and current KR or “King of the Road” owners will tell you the real factory hp rating was above 400 with possibly even more than 440 pound-feet of torque.

That should be a surprise to no one. This is a monster of a V8 engine. Some of the extra goodies on the GT500KR over a stock Ford Mustang include a fiberglass hood with a completely functional ram-air scoop. There is also a rear spoiler. You’ll also notice additional air scoops on the side panels and rear fenders.

Perhaps the most iconic upgrade over a stock Mustang are the sequential taillights. They look stylish during the day but they are incredible at night. Don’t worry, if you ever get a chance to see a ‘68 GT500KR on the road, you’ll get plenty of chances to stare at the taillights.

As for this Shelby GT500KR, it has under 65,000 miles on the odometer giving it plenty of life left. Considering its recent refurbishment, you can show off and enjoy this Mustang for years to come. The 3-speed Ford C6 automatic transmission makes it easier to handle for many drivers.

There is power steering to make it smooth to turn the front wheels. You also have power-assisted front disc brakes too, so there is plenty of stopping power available if things get out of control. The Highland Green with white rocker panel striping on the exterior finish looks great while the black vinyl interior remains highly desirable in classic American muscle cars.

All you need to do now is fire it up, feel the rumble of the Cobra Jet V8 purr, and shine those front-mounted Lucas foglights on the road ahead. It’s go time.

There is no reason to hold back when you are behind the wheel of a 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR fastback. After all, there is a 140 mph speedometer staring back at you. That’s what you get inside the GT500. You know, the GT500.
