In the 1965 film, Thunderball, Sean Connery once again takes on the iconic role of super spy, James Bond, as he heads to the Bahamas to save the world. The second-highest performing film of the franchise, about one quarter of the movie is spent underwater, and it culminates in a legendary scuba battle complete with harpoons and knives.
That same year, Swiss luxury brand Breitling released the Slow Motion, a pared down dive watch featuring clean lines, chunky luminescent indexes, squared-off hands, and a high contrast dial ring — all aimed at maximum legibility. The brand has recently resurrected the historic watch with the introduction of the Superocean, which balances the nostalgia of its heritage, while adding a slew of modern features including brightly colored dials and a ceramic-inlayed bezel. Shock, sand, and water resistant to 300 meters, it’s available in two strap options — rubber and metal bracelet — and both feature a folding clasp that allows for micro-adjustments for easy wear over a wetsuit. The hands and indexes are coated in Super-LumiNova for easy underwater readability.
