Grand Seiko 140th Anniversary Ref. SBGZ007 Watch

If any non-European watchmaker can give the Swiss hard-hitters a run for their money, it’s Grand Seiko. Their 140th Anniversary Ref. SBGZ007 Watch is equal parts artistic endeavor and horological triumph.

Design-wise, it’s inspired by the mountains of Japan’s Shinshu region, a part of the world much closer to the stars than the rest of us are. This is what the beautiful deep blue speckled dial is attributed to. Meanwhile, the platinum case is exquisitely hand engraved and hand polished, which explains why there’s only 50 of these limited editions available.

It runs on Grand Seiko’s legendary spring drive, a movement only watchmakers that’ve mastered both mechanical and quartz technologies can execute. It’s powered by a mainspring, but incorporates a quartz oscillator for an accuracy of ±1 second a month. Leave it to Seiko to combine the precision of an electronic quartz with the torque of a mechanical.
