Of the two Hans Wilsdorf siblings, you historically had to turn to little brother Tudor to find titanium watches. Now, with the Oyster Perpetual Deepsea Challenge, Rolex is breaking two kinds of ground. It’s their first RLX titanium model and it’s equipped with a massive 11,000-meter water resistance. That’s literally the maximum depth of the Pacific Ocean.
RLX is a grade 5 alloy, the workhorse of titanium grades thanks to its tank-like strength, and is way lighter than any of Rolex’s stainless steel offerings. It sports a fascinating satin finish, almost matte—a gunmetal-light of sorts.
Naturally, all of Rolex’s signatures are there, from the COSC-certified movement to the Mercedes hands. The coolest part about this watch is that it’s a genuine culmination of in-depth dive research. Partners include diving company, COMEX, and filmmaker James Cameron, who dove with the steel prototype that propelled Rolex to go titanium.
