Few cars make a lasting impression in a way the DeLorean DMC-12 has. From reaching 88 miles per hour in ‘Back to the Future’ to becoming an iconic 80s car with gull wing doors, the DMC-12 is a true collector’s car. Rumors of a new DeLorean have been circulating for years, but making it possible comes with some limitations.
Without getting into too many details, the bottom line is for nearly five decades smaller automobile manufacturers were subject to the same regulations as the largest companies. In December of 2015, new language for the “Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act” allows a smaller manufacturer to produce a limited number of replica cars that resemble vehicles made 25 years ago or more.
The replicas are still subject to equipment standards and they have to clear the Clean Air Act. This law allows low volume motor vehicle manufacturers to install an engine and emissions equipment from another manufacturer or to choose a crate engine if it has been granted a California Air Resources Board (CARB) Executive Order (EO).
In short, this new law enables the possibility of a new DeLorean that looks a lot like the one everybody recognizes. Modernizing its performance and emissions equipment is just icing on the cake. This is an exciting time for DeLorean fans. Over the years, many people have attempted to put different engines in the DMC-12 as they try to unleash more performance from the stainless steel time machine.
There are not a lot of details regarding which engine setup will be in the new DeLorean yet. A lot of that has to do with the slow implication of the law. However, you can still sign up to receive updates when they become available at DeLorean’s website. You can also fill out a non-binding new DeLorean Pre-Order Interest Application to get yourself on the reservation list.
You do not need to be Marty McFly or Doc Brown to go back in time inside a DeLorean once these replicas are in production. However, the law limits the amount of replicas each low volume motor vehicle manufacturer can sell within the United States to 325 models annually. So, if you want one, sign up to have a chance to buy the new DeLorean when it does become available.
