One glance at the 1955 Jaguar D-Type sends chills down the spine for any gearhead. Seductive curves following elegant body lines caressing the very soul of a vintage race car. Wrap your hands around this steering wheel and you will experience nostalgic flashbacks of winning at Le Mans in the ‘50s.
Of course, this is not just another D-Type, if there is such a thing. This is “The Ice Racer”, originally delivered to Jaguar connoisseur Curt Lincoln. There are several notable first-place finishes on the resume of this classic Jaguar D-Type.
Best of all, this particular Jaguar is available for sale through the reputable RM Sothebys. As a regular entry in vintage racing and rally events spanning two decades, this D-Type defines pedigree.
Under the bonnet is the original factory-upgraded 3.8L twin-cam inline 6-cylinder engine. This baby purrs as a Jaguar should. Go ahead, get on it, that is the only way to turn that purr into a growl. You’re going to want to throw the leash away after you hear the roaring wide-open throttle in the D-Type for the first time.
Cornering in a D-Type is just as liberating as hitting the straights. This car’s lightweight design keeps it nimble on its feet. A manual gearbox puts you in control. Should you chirp those rear tires a time or two, simply smile, say oops, and keep going.
At one point in May of 1959, Curt Lincoln informed the Jaguar racing chief that an overhaul was necessary to stay ahead of the competition. This is when the Jaguar crew replaced the engine block with the 3.8L version while making some other modifications.
From there, the car returned to its owner with a note. The small tag simply read, “+100 hp”. Curt Lincoln resumed racing in the D-Type and to no surprise, continued winning. Now, this iconic race car can be in your garage.
Keep in mind, supplies are extremely limited. This is one of only 54 D-Types ever produced. Of those 54, this is the only one with this specific story to tell. The list of tales is a mile long including being the only D-Type to ever race in the Soviet Union.
Although the final chapter of Jaguar D-Type chassis XKD 530 has yet to be written, only the driver can steer its destiny from here. A timeless classic, this 1955 Jaguar D-Type prefers to roam free. Perhaps the next owner will unleash it from time to time in an effort to revisit its glory.
