How would you like to own one of the rarest Ferrari cars to ever grace this planet? That’s exactly what you get with the 1987 Ferrari 288 GTO Evoluzione, this car is a unicorn. This is one of only five examples Ferrari built and it is only one of three examples currently available to the public.
That’s not all though. The 1987 GTO Evoluzione is the fastest GT car built by Ferrari in the 1980s. It is also the very last GT racing car to receive direct input from Enzo Ferrari himself. This particular GTO Evoluzione is Ferrari Classiche Certified, meaning this chassis does indeed feature its original, numbers-matching engine and gearbox.
Speaking of the engine, it is a twin-turbo 2.9L V8 engine producing a whopping 650 horsepower. Even better, with recent service and maintenance, this Ferrari is ready to shine at the track or in a showroom. Thanks to the reputable RM Sotheby’s, this Prancing Horse gem can be yours through a sealed auction. All you have to do is emerge as the winning bidder.
Ferrari began experimenting with Group B racing in the ‘80s. They took the 288 GTO and made it better within the rules and regulations of their racing class. Although the rules allowed Ferrari to make up to 20 Evoluzione variants of the 288 GTO, in the end, they only made a total of five examples.
Some of the highlights include Pininfarina’s revised bodywork featuring Kevlar and carbon fiber in an attempt to reduce weight. There is even a carbon-fiber rear spoiler. Obviously, there is a huge power increase in the Evoluzione compared to a standard road-going 288 GTO as well. The road-going version of the 288 only has about 400 horsepower compared to the 650 horses powering the Evoluzione variant.
Adding this 1987 Ferrari 288 GTO Evoluzione to your collection will put you in the company of rarefied air, especially within Prancing Horse circles. This exotic car is ready for spirited driving by its next owner, if that is what they choose to do with it. One thing is for sure, if you ever see this Ferrari out in public, you’re going to want to take pics or it didn’t happen.
