In the world of motorsports, the four rings of Audi are an intimidating symbol. When it comes to road-going cars, Audi translates to premium luxury combined with precision performance. The 2022 Audi E-Tron GT blends the German automaker’s racing expertise with EV technology to create an electrifying gran turismo experience.
Upon first glance, the futuristic styling of the new E-Tron makes you wonder if this is just another concept car that may or may not ever become available. Believe it or not, this toy hits the shelves in the summer of 2021.
Aerodynamic engineering allows Audi to get the drag coefficient down to an astounding 0.24, quite a low number for a sedan. Audi’s sophisticated and classy styling complements the aggressive stance of the E-Tron GT, further proof of the potential lurking beneath the surface.
The 2022 Audi E-Tron GT uses permanently excited synchronous motors in both the front and rear axles of the car. These motors combine to create 469 horsepower, capable of producing up to 522 hp with overboost for 2.5 seconds. Together, these motors create 464 pound-feet of torque. With overboost they produce 472 pound-feet of torque.
Hop into the driver’s seat to experience a 0 to 60 miles per hour time of only 3.9 seconds. The E-Tron GT is capable of reaching a top speed of 152 miles per hour. All-wheel drive combines with a superior three-chamber air suspension system for a smooth yet tight handling experience.
If you want to go faster, there is one other option. Introducing the very first EV from the Audi Sport division available in the United States: the RS E-Tron GT. This version puts 590 hp to the wheels with up to 637 available horses with overboost. You have access to 612 pound-feet of torque in the RS while being capable of reaching 60 mph in only 3.1 seconds.
Speaking of torque, the response is instantaneous in both models. You will feel the instant delivery to the wheels while enjoying the confidence of all-wheel drive upon launch.
Both models also feature available all-wheel steering technology should you want to drop the hammer while exiting the apex of a turn. You will feel a little more like the car is on rails with all-wheel steering when compared to a traditional setup.
Finally, Audi is using a two-speed automatic transmission in the E-Tron GT models. Many EV competitors do not use a two-speed transmission. The taller second gear provides a more comfortable highway driving experience.
Every month, more electric vehicle concepts are hitting the market than ever before. Unlike many of those ideas, the E-Tron isn’t just a dream anymore, it is almost here. Ride into the present looking like you are back from the future in the new E-Tron GT. Everything else will be an ancient relic.
