2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS

Over the years, Porsche has mastered the art of the flat-six cylinder engine. There is no doubt about that. That’s why enthusiasts can’t wait to catch an earful of the 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS featuring the same flat-six as the 911 GT3 Cup race car.

This naturally-aspirated flat-six engine revs all the way up to 9,000 rpm for your driving and listening pleasure. It also brings 493 horsepower with 331 pound-feet of torque to the party. This engine boasts precision engineering to the tune of 6.55 pounds per horsepower. That’s an impressive weight-to-power ratio.

Make no mistake about it, this is a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car born with pure racing pedigree. As always, Porsche sculpts every accent of their stylish design with function in mind. One of the more noticeable changes for the new 718 model is the addition of air intakes behind the driver and passenger windows.

These new air intakes improve the flow of intake air to the engine but they are also awesome to hear when driving. Obviously they are so close to the driver and passenger that hearing them is not optional. Keep in mind, it is not an annoying sound, these are the kind of details you actually want to hear in a sports car like this.

There are also the traditional Cayman side intakes in both of the rear quarter panels. This beastly flat-six requires a little more cooling than past 718 engines. Once you get the pedal to the metal in this Porsche, you’re going to be glad it has such exceptional ventilation. You can just keep running those hot sticky tires wherever the road leads you, for as long as your heart desires.

A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission keeps things rolling. This transmission offers you the option of taking control via paddle shifters or an all-new shift lever in the center console. Now that you know the ropes, go ahead and let this baby loose. Listen to that harmonious engine rumbling through the titanium exhaust tips if you opt for the Weissach package.

You’ll smile from ear to ear as your head snaps back into that Porsche embossed headrest every time. When you hear that flat-six purr while it pushes you from zero to 60 miles per hour in just 3.2 seconds, you will know true harmony. Keep going if you dare to see what 196 mph looks like, where you will reach the top speed in seventh gear.

As is the case with every Cayman, handling is exceptional. Porsche intentionally kept the weight down when designing the all-new Cayman GT4 RS. Final curb weight tips the scale at a nimble 3,227 pounds.

For the finishing touch, Porsche made sure the gorgeous fixed rear wing is extremely functional and efficient. If the swan-neck attachment design looks familiar, Porsche used the spoiler from the 911 RSR as inspiration.

Thanks to the rear wing and other aerodynamic tuning, the GT4 RS generates up to 25 percent more downforce than the standard Cayman GT4. Porsche even tuned the aerodynamics of the GT4 RS underbody.

If you can’t see yourself behind the wheel of a 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS, perhaps performance driving isn’t your cup of tea. For everyone else, pricing starts at $141,700, not including the $1,350 delivery fee. Expect to see this masterpiece on the streets in the summer of 2022.
