Ballast Point Manta Ray Double IPA

The first thing that may come to mind when you think of Ballast Point Brewing may very well be fish. Based out of San Diego, the nautically inclined brewery has been employing their resident artist, surfing-inspired Paul Elder, to draw its fish and ocean labels since the beginning. (Their skeleton-at-the-helm image for their Victory at Sea Porter is a particular favorite.)

The Manta Ray Double IPA is named for one of the largest rays in the ocean — with some growing as big as twenty feet across — so it’s a fitting name as Double IPA means big. More hops, higher alcohol, huge aroma. As part of their Flagship Series Manta Ray is on offer year round and packs a bigger ABV wallop than their approachable Discovery Series beer and hews closer to the rules than their more experimental Explorer Series. Grab a bottle and you’ll get fresh, citrus, melon and pine, and a smooth finish. With 23 awards under its belt, it’s a great Double IPA to try as you dive into the style.
