In my own journey to gobble all possible info about my favorite spirit, Clay Risen has been an invaluable guide. My copy of his American Whiskey, Bourbon & Rye is all kinds of used and abused. Now this New York Times editor and historian has distilled (yes) all of his extensive bourbon knowledge into a two-volume behemoth overflowing with bright, rich images and copious research and named it, fittingly, Bourbon: The Story of Kentucky Whiskey Boxed Set.
Telling the story of Kentucky whiskey, Risen takes you through the birth, boom, near-bust, and re-boom of America’s native spirit. He profiles distilleries, interviews whiskey makers and shakers, and tells you how to enjoy and collect bourbon. The boxed set also has a pull-out drawer full of frame-worthy reproductions of bottle labels, archival photos, and other bourbon memorabilia. Best enjoyed with a healthy pour of something aged in charred oak.
