Budweiser Freedom Reserve Red Lager

Craft beers are having a moment. Kind of a long moment, really. While growth in the craft sector has likely peaked, the space that craft brewers have carved out remains significant. Don’t rule out the Goliaths of domestic brewing just yet, though; they didn’t become giants by luck. Anheuser-Busch may not be a small craft-brewery by any stretch of the imagination, but the Budweiser Limited Edition Freedom Reserve is inspired by a craft brewer and founding father, whose recipe pre-dates even the ol’ tea-in-the-harbor hijinx.

The recipe, found in George Washington’s field journal from the French and Indian War, includes such historically delightful phrasing as “let this stand til it is little more than blood warm,” which is both apt and evidence of how great an influence the other founders, thankfully, had on our written history. The red lager is brewed by “a select group of brewery veterans,” according to Budweiser, and a portion of the proceeds from every case will go to Folds of Honor, a non-profit providing scholarships to families of wounded or fallen soldiers. Billed as rich with caramel malt flavor and hints of molasses, Freedom Reserve will be available from May through September, just in time to secure space in your Memorial Day and 4th of July coolers.
