Ducati MotoE Prototype

The age of the electric motorcycle is here and fans of one of the most popular bike manufacturers in the world are eagerly anticipating the Ducati MotoE Prototype. Beginning with the 2023 season. Ducati will be the only official supplier of electric motorcycles competing in the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup. In case you are wondering what that is, it is the electric racing class for the official MotoGP World Championship.

More importantly, the Ducati MotoE is the first racing bike from the famous Italian company to feature a fully electric powertrain. Tipping the scales at 496 pounds, the MotoE is lightweight for an FIM class bike. The current FIM class bike in use is the Energica which weighs 77 pounds heavier than the Ducati Prototype.

Ducati uses a combination of a large battery weighing 242 pounds and an electric motor weighing about 46 pounds to power the MotoE Prototype. Altogether, the MotoE produces 148 horsepower and 103 pound-feet of torque.

Ducati uses a carbon fiber battery case which rests on the aluminum subframe. There are two cooling circuits, one for the battery and one to keep both the motor and inverter cool. Speaking of the inverter, it weighs 11 pounds and works hand-in-hand with the 800-volt electrical system to make sure everything is on the same page.

For now, the reported top speed of the MotoE is about 171 miles per hour. Keep in mind, the team is still tweaking and testing this bike in preparation for next season. As is usually the case with Ducati bikes, Brembo brakes provide the stopping power.

Here is why Ducati enthusiasts are so excited for the MotoE Prototype though, they know once the engineers master this bike, the company will move swiftly to make an electric motorcycle for the streets.

For now, you will have to stay tuned to the 2023 FIM Enel MotoE World Cup to see the Ducati MotoE Prototype in action. You can also see it doing some test laps on the Ducati website. Only time will tell what Ducati has in store for an electric motorcycle built for the streets. There will be no shortage of riders lining up when that day finally comes.
