The IWC Pilot AMG Edition Chronograph is like that rare occasion when a classic untouchable song is sampled by a modern DJ to great effect. Instead of simply relaunching a time-honored watch design with unpurposefully flashy materials, IWC’s collaboration with Mercedes puts an autosport-specific spin on this remix.
It’s their first titanium-constructed Pilot Chrono, Grade 5, also used in racing cars. It’s as strong as stainless steel, but 45 percent lighter. The dial is made from the same carbon fiber used to build a racing car’s chassis (aka its bottom framework). Design-wise, it provides the face with an exquisite black weave that allows the silver-plated subdials to pop in the light.
This is all protected by a sapphire glass, as is the Mercedes logo-tinted exhibition caseback. You horologically curious gents can watch the 33-jewel in-house 69385 caliber, which is decorated with Côtes de Genève perlage, delicate pattern systems engraved onto the movement. And for an extra touch of luxury, a black calfskin leather strap that’s textured like the watch’s carbon fiber face.
