Catching a glimpse of the future of mobility is always intriguing. Since the first concept car ever graced the public’s eye, drivers dream of what might come down the assembly line next. The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX Concept is pushing the EV sector into new territory.
The engineers at Mercedes-Benz set a goal of taking electric vehicle range and efficiency to the next level. To understand how far they pushed the boundaries of the Vision EQXX Concept, you should know they went back to the drawing board for this design. They began reimagining what an EV could be from the ground up.
In the end, the proof is always in the pudding. Mercedes-Benz achieved a range of 620 miles or about 1,000 kilometers with the Vision EQXX on a full charge. They use a battery small enough that it could fit inside a compact car. Mercedes-Benz realized they needed to make smaller, lightweight batteries for electric vehicles without sacrificing range performance.
From a styling perspective, the Vision EQXX looks futuristic. The sloping rear trunkline is definitely an ode to yesteryear while the rear tail lights of the Vision EQXX are something many people want to see Mercedes-Benz put into production. Overall, the body design of the Vision EQXX is fantastic, blending style from yesterday with vision for tomorrow.
Perhaps one of the biggest motivators behind the concept for the EQXX is the road trip. You don’t even have to read On the Road by Jack Kerouac to understand the significance of the road trip. The Vision EQXX is looking to put the range back into your adventures, without carbon emissions.
Mercedes-Benz claims the Vision EQXX achieves an efficiency rating of 95% from the battery to the wheels. They go on to proclaim the EQXX only consumes 10 kWh of energy per 100 kilometers or about 6 miles per kWh.
The engineers used Formula 1 thinking as well as advanced aerodynamic tuning to significantly reduce the drag coefficient of the EQXX. They also used as many recycled and plant-based materials as they could to design a much more sustainable EV.
Speaking of Formula 1, the EQXX even features a lightweight F1 subframe design. After all, it would not be a true Mercedes-Benz if it did not capture some of their racing heritage.
From software to engineering, the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX Concept just reset the bar when it comes to EV efficiency. The only remaining question is whether or not Mercedes will put the EQXX into production.
