Samsung 110’’ MicroLED TV
Warner Bros just announced that all of its movies scheduled for 2021 will be released simultaneously in movie theaters and on HBO Max. That means titles like Matrix 4 will join all the other movies (Mulan, Trial of the Chicago 7) that were released to streaming instead of theaters because 2020 turned out… different than movie studios or anyone else on the planet expected.
What this all means for movie theaters is no doubt bad news. What it means for home viewing is cause for celebration. And, just maybe, cause for going all-in and bringing the movie theater to your living room. Samsung’s MicroLED TV is a whopping 110” inches on the diagonal — yes, longer than nine feet. To make the whole thing possible, Samsung called on their semiconductor business to help make the technology easier to manufacture and deliver.
Using micrometer-sized LED lights (hence the MicroLED name) they’ve eliminated the backlight issue of other screens by making the structures self-illuminating. The result is super accurate colors and the ability to express a full range of colors with its 8 million pixels.
Like a superhero/supervillain with a megascreen in a secret layer, the TV offers Multi View that lets you watch four screens of content (each with 55 inch screens) at once, either from the same source or different sources (ie you can play a video game while watching a walkthrough on YouTube at the same time).
Sound is delivered by the embedded Majestic Sound System that outputs 5.1 channel sound without an external speaker, because what good are all those giant visuals if the sound is small and tinny?
The mega TV was unveiled earlier in December on Samsung’s home turf of Korea, where it’s available for pre-sale. The global launch will happen in the first quarter of 2021, giving you just enough time to find the right popcorn maker.
