The Makena Residence

To be perfectly honest, if someone offered us a waterless hut on the shores of Maui, we’d take it. But this? Yeah, this would work too. Designed by San Francisco-based architects Walker Warner, the Makena Residence sits on the Maui coastline where it almost (almost) distracts the eye from the glory of the natural surroundings.

Designed to graciously integrate itself into the setting, the home was built to look like a modest, concrete-clad single story when viewed from the street, but oceanside, a lower floor of glass and steel opens wide and expansive to the neverending Pacific.

Not only did they work to integrate the home with the look and feel, the Makena house is also intended to make as small of an environmental impact as possible. Ten foot roof overhangs shield the house from sun and a ceiling-fan powered ventilation system takes advantage of natural ventilation to cut down on energy use. Solar panels on the roof, reclaimed decking and wood floors, and stormwater management all add to the sustainability, earning the Makena LEED Silver certification.

Inside, a master suite and two guest bedrooms join an open plan kitchen and living space, all of which open to floor to ceiling views of the ocean and the ever-present island breezes that remind you that you are indeed living in paradise.
