Toyota Tacozilla Tacoma Camper Overlanding Rig Concept

If your “back in the day” memories include campers from the ‘70s and ‘80s, you’re in for a real treat. Introducing the Toyota Tacozilla Tacoma Camper Overlanding Rig Concept, an ode to the great overlanding legends of yesteryear.

Make a lasting impression wherever your outdoor adventures take you in the Tacozilla Camper Concept. This baby is 100 percent custom. Marty Schwerter is the lead designer for the project at the Toyota Motorsports Garage. He had this to say about the project, “We really didn’t want it to look like a refrigerator on the back of a truck, so you’ll see it’s all rounded edges.”

Their first step was removing the Tacoma truck bed to make room for the camper modifications. They wanted to design the camper area with consideration for people over six feet tall. The idea is to make sure a six-foot tall person can stand up and walk the length of the interior without getting a concussion.

In the end, mission accomplished. They even created a pass-through opening between the cabin of the Tacoma and the rear camper structure. This process may seem simple on paper but saying the Tacozilla Overlanding Concept needs to maintain structural integrity would be an understatement.

Off-roading and overlanding can be hell on a chassis. Therefore the team needed to make sure none of their modifications would compromise structural integrity. From there, they lifted the Tacoma’s suspension about two inches to make way for the 285/70/17 General Tire Grabber X3 all-terrain tires.

One feature every outdoor enthusiast will appreciate is the pop-up Lexan skylight that provides ambient lighting and air circulation inside the Tacozilla Tacoma Camper. Tacozilla even features a fully insulated interior to keep you cozy.

There is also a full bathroom with a hot-water shower when you need to freshen up after a long day outside. You’ll enjoy preparing a bite to eat in the fully-operational kitchen featuring a stove and sink. Even the 3D-printed dining table doubles as a backlit piece of art on the wall when you are not using it.

The Toyota Tacozilla Tacoma Camper Overlanding Rig Concept checks every box. For the finishing touch, the exterior sports a vintage-styled white base paint with classic yellow, orange, and bronze striping. The rest of the expedition is yours to create from here as the legend of Tacozilla lives on in the wilderness.
