For about a decade, the potential upside of developing a hydrogen-powered supercar has been lurking over the entire automotive industry. There were a lot of obstacles to overcome in pursuit of this clean energy alternative but one company is ready to unveil their masterpiece. Introducing the world’s very first hydrogen hypercar, the Viritech Apricale Hydrogen-Powered Hypercar.
The end result is impressive, to say the least. You see, the biggest drawback when developing an electric hypercar is dealing with the heavy lithium battery systems required to power the vehicle. Hydrogen-powered cars do not suffer the same fate. In fact, hydrogen-powered cars can weigh about the same amount or less than an old petrol-engine vehicle.
This allows you to harness the full potential of hydrogen when it comes to hypercar performance. That’s exactly what Viritech did with the Apricale. On top of its stunning performance, the Apricale looks really good, as it should since Pininfarina designed it.
Viritech believes in making “zero-emission vehicles without compromise” which is exactly what the Apricale is. Using expertise gained in the world of F1 racing and other motorsports, Viritech set out to make a hypercar weighing 1,000 kilograms or about 2,204 pounds.
Why is this a big deal? Well, according to Viritech, the Apricale delivers the handling of some of the best petrol-powered hypercars while boasting lower lifetime emissions than a battery-powered electric vehicle.
Now here is where it gets even more interesting, the Apricale comes with 1,072 brake-horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. Power gets to the wheels via two electric motors, one for each axle. That kind of power translates to a 0 to 62 miles per hour time of 2.5 seconds and a top speed of over 200 mph.
With production slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2023, the Viritech Apricale Hydrogen-Powered Hypercar is already generating a lot of buzz in the industry. It will be interesting to see how much hydrogen-powered vehicles will catch on in the near future. For now, Viritech appears to be on course to be a major part of the equation.
