Very fine and rare are two descriptors that generally mean good times in the glass. And when those words are appended to a bottle from Woodford Reserve, it’s even more exciting. The super-limited yearly Master’s Collection has been going strong for a decade and a half and each expression has, up until now, been a way to highlight discoveries made at the 200-plus year-old distillery.
For 2020 (and from here on out) the Master’s Collection will focus on the future, showcasing the innovations brought about by Assistant Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall, named to the position in 2018, and Master Distiller Chris Morris who’s been overseeing Woodford Reserve bourbon making since 2003. The barrels tapped for this year’s Master’s Collection include those put up the year Morris came on the scene. Not surprisingly, you’ll get lots of oak flavors, along with brown sugar, tobacco and clove, and a long malty sweet finish — very fine, and rare indeed.
