1975 Lamborghini Countach LP400 ‘Periscopio’

The Lamborghini Countach’s styling was so far ahead of its time. Many younger generations associate this car with the 1980s but the design itself emerged from the early ‘70s. This particular 1975 Lamborghini Countach LP400 ‘Periscopio’ is one of the most sought-after versions of the historic Italian sports car.

Talk about a design that stands the test of time, the extravagant wedge styling of the Countach still garners instant recognition everywhere it goes. This is as iconic as a car can get. Imagine adding this car to your collection.

Luckily, your imagination will not have to wander very far thanks to RM Sotheby’s making this 1975 Lamborghini Countach LP400 ‘Periscopio’ available for sale to the public. Best of all, this particular Countach features a very desirable black exterior with black leather interior color combination.

Legendary designer Marcello Gandini of Bertone is responsible for capturing the hearts of Lamborghini enthusiasts forever with the Countach’s design. Driving the Countach is still what makes this car so special but the design is what created so many fans worldwide.

This is one of only 150 total Periscopio edition Countachs ever built. It actually has a 3.9L engine by industry standards since it cashes in at 3,929cc of displacement. However, the number 400 of the LP400 title insinuates this car has a 4.0L, not a 3.9L

None of that matters once you fire up the V12 engine. The depth of the purr you hear comes from the dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) design of the 12-cylinder engine.

Since the engine mounting is longitudinal instead of using a transverse-mount design, Lamborghini designated this project as the “Longitudinale Posteriore” 400. Thus, LP400 is really just a reference to the engine mount style within the car’s chassis, a unique design for its era.

As for the word Periscopio, that name has slightly more humorous origins. Lamborghini realized you needed a periscope-like rear-view mirror to get any kind of decent visibility behind the car. Who cares? It’s a Countach.

When you’re ready to add a Countach Periscopio to your collection, you already know these cars are very difficult to come by. Especially in pristine condition. If you pass on this opportunity, you will need more than just a periscope to get this Countach out of your thoughts.
